Consultancy
Paul Murray Catalysis Consulting offers consultancy in all aspects of Design of Experiments (DoE), Principal Component Analysis (PCA), catalysis, Quality by Design (QbD), solvent selection and process development.
Design of Experiments: We train and support clients to use DoE to accelerate their projects. We offer a comprehensive approach from selection of factors, ranges and the design, through to completion of a detailed report with as much or a little involvement throughout. A more advisory role is also available where we are on hand to answer your specific questions.
Generally, our value comes in factor identification, design selection, selection and interpretation of the most likely model and prediction of reaction outcomes. Our approach, ‘DoE by chemists for chemists’ means everything will be related to your chemistry and we tailor our descriptions to your level of understanding.
Principal Component Analysis: Using our extensive (proprietary) solvent and catalyst/ligand databases we have created reagent maps which can be used to deliver efficient understanding of the chemical space and requirements of the chemical reaction. We combine PCA with DoE to create powerful designs to efficiently optimise complicated reactions in managable work packages.
Correctly combining DoE and PCA in solvent selection and catalysis will significantly reduce development time, enable optimisation of the most cost effective catalytic process and guide the selection of sustainable, greener processes through informed decision making.
Catalysis: We use our expertise to guide the development of efficient, sustainable, economically viable catalytic processes including the implementation of commercial manufacturing processes through to removal or recovery of the metal catalyst. We focus on the design of new shorter synthetic routes that fully exploit the opportunities presented by the chemistry, recommend reaction conditions for an array of transformations and guide experimental programs to optimise processes including the selection of the optimum catalyst and ligand. We perform detailed analysis of reaction outcomes to identify areas of concern that affect the reaction efficiency, product quality, impurity and waste profiles. This can be applied to homogeneous and heterogeneous catalytic processes.
Quality by Design: We implement QbD principles to help clients with good process development. We can help with performing risk assessments, developing control strategies and following a QbD process to be certain of your process.
Process Development: In 26 years of process chemistry, Paul has taken many reactions to processes, learning tricks and developing his chemical 'intuition' along the way. WIth an understanding of chemical engineering (without being an engineer), Paul can highlight potential pitfalls, knows what to look for and can spot patterns in the data. When working on your process, Paul will assess what's different, what's the same, what should be working but isn't, and then use his broad understanding and varied chemical toolkit to help solve the problem.
